"This cowardly traitor state, secure from harm, as she thought, in her central position, with hellish haste dragged her Southern sisters into the caldron of secession. Little did she dream that the hated flag would again wave over her soil, but this bright morning a thousand Union banners are floating in the breeze....” W.T. Sherman

Please don't spread rumors. Posting an unverified statement which begins with, "I heard," is old fashioned rumor mongering. A rumor doesn't have to be malicious to be a rumor. Speculation and conjecture on a national forum has a tendency to take on a life of its own because others will say what they heard causing the rumor to be tweaked and tweaked. Ultimately, someone will challenge someone else to refute the rumor. When no one does, the rumor is deemed true. Unfortunately the people who could refute rumors could care less about rumors.Originally Posted by m35gibson

The committee doesn't need to do such because Gettysburg is like an irresistable porch light which draws moths from all over the world. No matter how much some moths warn the others to stay away from the light, there's bound to be a bunch of dried moth parts on the door mat in the morning.
Since there will be a bumper crop of people with too much money in their pockets coming to Gettysburg on that anniversary year, the committee will do everything it can to harvest some of those dollars without risking too many of its own. It's old fashioned capitalism at work. The committee will shove as many people - reenactors and 'taters - onto its land, into its merchandise booths and sell as many dvd's of the battle as possible. If the committee can clear sufficient net profit by renting adjacent and nearby lands and without having to pay too much for additional infrastructure - or anything at all - it's the kind of thing it would do.
If there is extra land, you're going. If there isn't extra land, you're going. So, why does it really matter?
I am neither confirming nor denying what you heard. I'm saying you should not put stock in rumors. Rumor mongering reminds me of a Mark Twain saying that a lie can be half way 'round the world before the truth can get its pants on.

"Authenticity conflicts occur when reenactors from one end of the spectrum attend events at the other end of the spectrum then try to impose their own standards instead of event standards."

Silas just spelled it out in the quickest possible way, and showed good manners in doing so in my opinion. He was right on every count in my book.

Well to me he chastises someone for what is one of the number 1 crimes on this site (starting a rumor), and then proceeds to presuppose exactly how & where the 150th Gettysburg will occur himself.
& by the way, regarding the extreme negativity towards 'rumors' I've never understood the abhorrence to them here - in a hobby where information from those in command or otherwise most in the know about things seem to be the hardest people to get ahold of & rarely take the time to publically share info at the least [with some exceptions to be sure such as Mr. Anders], I feel so called rumors have their place so long as said rumors are actually trying to convey possibly useful information & not being malicious. I likewise hate when a thread is closed that starts with a relevant question & then immediately gets closed with a statement something like "ask the event organizers or the commanders', when that is often one of the least fruitful ways of getting something answered.
