Federal musician impression

I am looking to get back into being a musician again and haven't done it in a very long time since i was young. I'm 23 now and haven't touched a drum since 16 and haven't touched a fife since 14. I always did confederate musician and now will bedoing federal with ohio regimentin georgia. Any advice would really help. Oneof my main questions is did musicians in the army of the cumberland wear musicians coats or just basic issue? Any advice on picking back up the fife would help as well. Thanks.

I've seen a photo of the 125th Ohio field music. They wore standard issue 4 button sack coats and flat black slouch hats.

To relearn fife get a Bruce and Emmitt and American Veteran fifer books. Try Fall Creek Sutler. Then order Camp Chase Fifes and Drums recordings. That way you know how it sounds a well as the music. Check this website, in the picture I'm on the far right.

Also, many of the tunes in the American Veteran Fifer are post-war, or can't be documented as being played in the war. Many were probably composed after the war by veterans, mostly one A.F. Hopkins, who was the fife major of the Nat'l Association of Civil War Musicians, a G.A.R. related organization.

Most of the tunes in Bruce and Emmett are very difficult, especially if you haven't played in a number of years. You're probably better off trying some stuff out of Howe's, Nevin's, Hart's, or the period tunes in the AVF. These sources contain many more tunes commonly played during the war than B&E. The camp duty in the AVF is basically straight out of Howe's. B&E for the most part is analogous to the famous jaguar-skin trousers... It's period music, but not P/E/C (period, everyday, common) music. Of course there are some exceptions.

CCDB has midi files of the AVF tunes on their site, www.drumband.org in addition to PDF files.

I thought the P was for plain, not period....even so, that might make B&E not E\C.....

OF course, tell that to the 5th Minnesota Field Music's who used B&E during the War....the manual is (I think] at Fort Snelling....contains the self printed name of the musician who used it during the war.....

Yes, I meant to say plain. There's nothing plain about B&E...you get the point.

I saw that Minnesota B&E. But just because they owned a copy doesn't mean they were able to play all those difficult pieces in B&E. Same is true today.
