Default Whatever happened to the National Memorial Day Parade?

Have we, as a hobby, abandoned it to the Spanish-American War reenactors, the high school bands, and the Confederate bagpiper? Or has the recruitment of people to march become much more low-key? It's too bad there was never a great interest, inasmuch as we marched with thousands of current and serving members of our military, and had over 150,000 people watching us. Not to mention, of course, that Memorial Day was a direct result of the Civil War.

If anybody knows who is organizing things this year -- if that is happening -- perhaps they will post some information.

    Thanks,

For me, in Ohio, I'm already committed to a local parade that our unit does. While it would be nice to take part in DC, there's a part of me that isn't willing to make that long a trip for a parade, or to take away from the local parade.

Some mixed feelings, to be sure, but the local loyalty wins out.

Mr. Biederman -- That makes perfect sense to me, and there are many much closer units with similar commitments. I was referring to the group that took over the organization of this event last year from Doug Dobbs & Co. Maybe they lost interest, but I was wondering what had become of them.

    Thanks for your reply.

Bruce, last I heard the NPS hadn't cleared the group's registration. Maybe they're tightening up on security. I remember a couple of years ago having to "demilitarize" the weapon by removing the nipple. Earlier this year a group planning to participate in the Lincoln inauguration were told to leave the weapons at home.

But, you know, if you're in the area, we'll still be strolling down the W&OD on Saturday the 28th.

I organized it last year, and have been attempting to do so this year as well. Apparently the parade is under different management than last year. I have both mailed and emailed my application and both have been "lost." I recently faxed the application, but have received no response.

Unless something changes in the next few days, I would assume they aren't accepting the submission of "Union Civil War Reenactors."

I know the SVU is participating, and I know they would be happy to accommodate a few more uniformed federals.

    Oh well, maybe next year....

Wow, that's the same thing that happened to the Confederate units attempting to participate in the Baltimore Grand Procession.
I wonder who is on the Invitation Committee of the DC parade.

    Default Such a shame...

...we were just starting to get a decent company in size, too, and even had good music with us last year. Oh, well. Maybe next year.

Yeah, I'm pretty bummed, we even had a detachment of 11th NY fire zouves who wanted to attend. Number were looking good.

I'd suggest that anyone who wants to go contact the SUV, as they will be there and wouldn't mind the company.

Turns out I can't go anyway, because I close on my house that day anyway...

Next year! New Job, Baby and House in the span of a month has put me behind in the ol' hobby game for a bit...
