Musket caps way up in price.

Is it me or did musket caps and other black powder caps sky rocket in price?

I can buy Remington #11 pistol(percussion) caps for $5 at my local box store every day of the week. Thats about the same price I have paid for a couple of years.
Musket caps from the local big gun shop cost $7 or so and have been at this steady price for a couple of years.( NOT CCI 6 winger or crappy reenactor caps).
Now if I buy from the Jag Shop (if he can get them) a sleeve of musket caps the price goes down to about $5.50 The German musket caps can be hard to get in certain areas. And thats what I use primarily, the ole red label RWS.

At a recent event at Ft Defiance (TN) they were charging $13 per 100 RWS musket caps. They were $10 per 100 not too long ago. No sure if this is the prevailing competitive price or just what was being charged there. I buy caps by the 1000 with a couple guys and split the order. Most do the same with black powder, that is split a case.

The prices of things like caps and powder are only going one way. They are never going to be cheaper tomorrow than they are today.

Didn't they used to sell them by 250-count? I bought a bunch many moons ago and haven't made a purchase in a while.

Flintlocks are starting to look pretty good at that price. Enjoy these '61 events while you can... it'll be another five years before you can use a flinty again at an event.

That has been the price in Florida for about a year now. I have been purchasing the new CCI 4 wing caps for $9/100 from James Country and have had good luck. I do miss the $5/250 count caps that I used to buy.

Yes, Navy Arms caps were $10 for 250 about five years ago. RWS was the same for 200 musket caps. That was the big selling point for Navy Arms caps which were in a metal tin. Then a couple years back, I want to say 2007 (?) they were classified as hazmat for shipping purposes and the price went way up from $10 per 200 to $10 per 100. Effectively doubled in other words.

Like everything else, they appear to be going up in price again. About all you can do is buy in quantity and split up the order. If you plan on getting caps at your next event you might get an unpleasant surprise.

I have not seen the CCI copper 4 wing caps, but from what I have heard they are perfectly fine. No fragmentation hazard like the 6 wing.

I used the new CCI "Reenactor" four wing caps for the first time, this weekend. I was very pleased with them. Of course, I was also pleased with their old six wing caps!

I think I paid about six bucks for them (100) at Fort Chambers Supply, in Chambersburg, PA.

No. 11 CCI caps are selling for 7.99 here in Southern Ohio. I haven't priced musket caps yet. I'm going to have to talk to a dealer buddy and see about buying in bulk.

RWS caps are sold only in packs of 100 now, if you can get them at your local shop.

My local shop switched entirely to the CCI reenactor 4 wing variety.

At one time, a fellow I knew bought RWS caps from the factory 10,000 at a time. I believe the price was $4.00 a container.

I have used the CCI 4 wing caps for reenactors in a '61 Armi-sport Springfield. For me, they worked about the same as the RWS caps. I wrote a review of them in my blog here. On this site (cwreenactors.com) there's a post discussing issues someone had using them in a Sharp's Carbine (http://www.cwreenactors.com/forum/sh...ad.php?t=19969), so you might want to test out a few before trying them in something other than a standard-issue infantry musket.

I recently stumbled onto a vendor here in Ohio selling Navy Arms 4-wing musket caps at $20 for a tin of 250--I just haven't had a chance to try them out, yet.
