Default Civil war army burial customs

Our unit has lost a founding member this past week. He was a great man and a great friend. He was an retired Capt. and an 18 year veteran in the US Army. The Army is providing a modern day burial salute at the grave site. As a unit we are trying to get together a period correct salute as well. We are an artillery unit and have plenty of members to participate. Does anyone have any links or info I could look at as to the actual salute used in the Civil War? Any help would be greatly appreciated on this issue. Thanks in advance.

    Rob,

I think what you wish to do is a great idea.
Are you wanting to do a period gun salute? Small arms? With the big gun?

Most of the local Guard Units that preform these kinds of services will (usually) work with you on preforming these types of activities.
My suggestion is to contact them, let them know what you would like to do in addition to their normal services with antique type weapons/firearms. And the time lag that maybe involved with reloading to finishing the period salute.

    Default Salute

His widow and long time member as well wants a cannon salute. I'll find out which unit is doing the modern grave side salute and work with them on the details. Maybe after the rifle salute and taps we could fire a round in his honor. Thanks for the feedback.

A suggestion as to a ceremony I did a while back.
Ask the Army to do a single gun salute with their (usually a 5 or 6 man detail) detail.
Then have your WBtS troops (how many you use should mirror the modern Army detail number) fire a single gun salute.
Then fire off the cannon for the third and final salute.

Just an idea that worked well for me once.
