Western Federal Blues at Manassas

Gentlemen:
The Western Federal Blues are attending Manassas 150th. We are looking for Union Men who wish to go to Virginia in the hot sun to experience the first major battle of the Civil War! We would like to go and show the East how the men from the West do it.
If you are interested in joining our effort please go to our website at www.westernfederalblues.org for more information. We will have the preliminary information up within the next week or so.
I would like to invite you men to raise a mess or a company to attend with the Blues. We will be providing a ration program and although we have not settled on an impression just yet we are considering two that will not require to purchase additional or unusual uniforms or accouterments. We will however stick to our progressive attitude and represent the Civil War soldier to the best of our ability.

After much research we've decided on the impression for Manassas. It is the 2nd Regiment - Ohio Infantry (90 Day Regiment.) The full research will be on at www.westernfederalblues.org
We wanted to make sure to accuratly portray the Federal Soldier at Manassas without costing an arm or a leg. Please look at our guidelines for participation below and if you are interested in participating with us or attempting to put together a company to go with us please let me know.

2nd Regiment – Ohio Infantry (3 months, 1861)
Organized at Columbus, Ohio, and mustered in April 18, 1861. Ordered to Washington, D. C., April 19, and duty in the defenses of that city till July. Attached to Schenck's Brigade, Tyler's Division, McDowell's Army of Northeast Virginia, June-July. Advance on Manassas, Va., July 16-21. Occupation of Fairfax Court House July 17. Battle of Bull Run July 21. Mustered out July 31, 1861.

The following guidelines are a minimum set of standards for participating with the Western Federal Blues at the 150th Anniversary of First Manassas.

UNIFORM
Jackets: Fatigue blouse with plain eagle buttons.
Trousers: Federal Issue Trousers preferred dark blue
Suspenders of civilian pattern, cotton webbing, canvas, or ticking with either button holes or leather tips with tin or brass buckles (no nickel plated metal).
Shirt: Red Flannel or Federal Issue Domet Flannel
Hat: Federal Issue Forage Cap or Hardee Hat. Hat Brass should be highly polished. Havelocks would be present in limited numbers.
Footwear: Brogans preferred sewn but pegged acceptable
Drawers: Military issue or civilian style in cotton or wool flannel if worn
Eyewear and Glasses:
Spectacles were not a common item amongst Civil War soldiers. Try to be without them during the event. If you have to have glasses they must be of the period. No modern glasses may be worn.
Civilian Attire: Very limited if any
General Appearance: The 2nd Ohio was proclaimed as one of the best drilled and sharpest regiments in the army at that time. They should appear in the field as “spit and polished.”

M1842 Musket .69 caliber Harpers Ferry or Springfield Arsenal
1853 Enfield Rifle-Musket .577 caliber
M1855 Rifled Musket .58 caliber Springfield Arsenal
M1861 Rifled Musket .58 caliber Springfield Arsenal

ACCOUTERMENTS
Cartridge Box – Federal Issue for 69 or .58 caliber weapon with appropriate tin.
Cap Pouch – Federal Issue M1850
Waist Belt – Federal Issue
Belt Plate – Federal Issue US on the face – No OVM or OVI plates
Blanket – US Issue of grey or brown or grey-brown
Gum Blankets and Ponchos – These were not issued to troops at the war’s beginning. Some states issued them, but given the situation with the 2nd Ohio they probably did not have them at Manassas.
Haversack – black painted
Knapsacks – M1855 Double-bag knapsack
Canteen – smooth side canteen – no “bulls- eye” canteens

Chad, you may want to get hold of the powers to be regarding the 2nd Ohio. The scenario is very specific as to what unit does what and the 2nd Ohio is not being portrayed within the scenario. Hate to see you show up all dressed up and nowhere to go.

The Army of the Ohio will be portraying the 1st/2nd Ohio for the event. In battle they will be representing the actions of a New York Regiment, but in camp they will be Buckeyes. I do not claim to speak for them, but I would suggest you contact their leadership regarding this.

All known battalions that are attending have been established months ago. I would get a hold of someone ASAP.

No disprespect here but, did you just crawl out of a cave or something? We, the Western Federal Blues, got our ducks in a row with the powers to be a long time ago. Back in January in fact. We know where we will be and what we will be doing. As Scott said, we'll be New York in action, but Bukeyes in camp. If you have questions or concerns, please contact Chad or myself personally via pm, email, or by other means. The forum is not the place to bring up the matter. Thanks.

Its a shining example of a matter best approached by private message rather than public sniping.

Of course, reading event information is vital. Even I know that Ohio men are portraying one well researched option in camp, and another well researched option in the field for this event.

And I'm not from there, or registered for the event.

We wish the Western Federal Blues well in their efforts.
