    Default Civil War CDs

Awright, I admit it, this is little bit of shameless self-promotion.

My sister and I are harpists and have been playing Civil War music on our harps for quite awhile. We just cut a new CD (our sixth) that has some favorites from the Civil War era--war songs, love songs, hymns, and whatnot.

It's called Joyful Harps Yesteryear and has things like Yellow Rose of Texas, The Young Volunteer, Wait For the Wagon, Be Thou My Vision, Beautiful Dreamer and a bunch of other stuff.

So anyway, if you're a Civil War music enthusiast, you might enjoy it. We have another one too that we released about six years ago called Joyful Harps 1865 that has a bunch of similiar stuff.

You can order it via www.joyfulharps.com.

What are some of y'all's other favorite Civil War CDs or artists?

    Well, Since you ask........

I'm partial to music that was pretty much documented performed during the war.

For the string type of music I like the 2nd South Carolina, For Fife and Drums-Camp Chase has been pretty much the standard, For Irish music of the period-David Kincaid is the best and for piano music-Helen Beedle is terrific. All of them do music that is well documented and they have provided good liner notes in their CDs.

And of course I'm quite taken with brass band music

    Our latest CD is:
Hurrah for the Union! Music of Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War"

In honor of the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth, The Federal City Brass Band presents a new CD recording featuring favorite music of Lincoln and the Civil War, including songs from Lincoln’s presidential campaigns, hymns, sentimental ballads, operatic selections, music written especially for his inaugurations and funeral, patriotic airs and popular wartime tunes. Lincoln was greatly moved by the music which touched his heart time and again during his life and his presidency, and he recognized music’s ability to stir the conscience and inspire powerful emotion. Many of the pieces selected for this special album are those which Lincoln is known to have particularly loved and requested on several occasions. This fully-produced CD contains 21 musical tracks, including selections recorded live in concert at Ford’s Theatre, and comes with a beautiful 20-page professionally-designed booklet of photos and comprehensive program notes. A complete listing of tunes contained on the album is posted on our website in the FCBB Gift Shop, along with sample sound files and easy on-line ordering! Visit www.nationalcivilwarbrassmusic.org today!

And yes, I know it's a shameless plug too, but we need to recoup the production costs and help raise money so we can send the band out to support events!

Jari has a good post here as he mentions some great musicians including his own band 'The Federal City Brass Band' which I have the CD, 'Pride of the Regiment'. I have to admit I am mainly a string band fan and have all the CD's by The 2nd South Carolina String Band.

All of the above are excellent choices, and I'll also add the 97th Regimental String Band, Martin Liebschner for banjo, and the old 125th Ohio Tiger Band for fife and drum

What I wish more fife and drum corps would do with their CDs is document the music for both the fife AND the drum parts. Otherwise the listener doesn't know whether the drumbeats are from 1862 or 1962. The Carolina Fifes and Drums did a good job of this in their latest CD.

What makes some people able to come through catastrophes and others, apparently just as able, strong and brave, go under? It happens in every upheaval. Some people survive; others don't. What qualities are in those who fight their way through triumphantly that are lacking in those who go under...? I only know that the survivors used to call that quality 'gumption.' So I wrote about the people who had gumption and the people who didn't."

The Libby's morphed for a while into the Cumberland Blues but are back as the Libby Prison Minstrels with some changes to the band lineup. Website at www.libbyprisonminstrels.com

I also like Camp Chase and 2nd South Carolina.

I've really become a fan of the Susquehanna Travellers and the 46th Pennsylvania Regimental Band (a.k.a. Logan Guard). Susquehanna has a few CDs out and have played at numerous Balls in Gettysburg. I'm not sure if the 46th has CDs or not. I'll have to check on that.
"Let me tell you what is coming. After the sacrifice of countless millions of treasure and hundreds of thousands of lives you may win Southern independence, but I doubt it. The North is determined to preserve this Union. They are not a fiery, impulsive people as you are, for they live in colder climates. But when they begin to move in a given direction, they move with the steady momentum and perseverance of a mighty avalanche."Gov. Sam Houston-Texas
