    Default Federal canteen

I need some advice on a Federal canteen cover, is'nt the correct color a tanish color? My main impression is an AoT Confederate when we galvanize we portray a western theater Union unit. I just got back from an event this weekend where we were Federal all weekend, and all the sutlers on robbers row were selling canteens with blue or gray covers on the canteens I didn't think it was correct so I didn't get one. Any help would be appreciated, I've got the Confederate impression down and I would like to get the Federal right as well.

Yes I have this same question. What type of canteen would a western union infantry have? Would they get it from the Cinnicinti (sp) depot?

    Sirs,

according to the May 2005 issue of The American Civil war Illustrated ( which I have in front of me) the most common type of canteen, one which was used by federal forces such as Sherman's Atlanta Army, the Army of the Cumberland, the army of the Ohio, and the Valley campaign Armies, would have been issued from the Cicinnatti depot, and, for the most part, would have had dark blue, and grey jeancloth covers with a hemp twine cork attatchment.

    thanks,

Most of the canteens I see in museums seem to have either a grayish or brown / tan jean cloth cover. I have seen examples of sky and dark blue as well, but I fear that (based on survivng examples) these may be over-represented in the hobby. On my two canteens, I have one af a basic grey jean and one of a varigated grey jean, both smothside that I can use on either side of the battle line.
