This leather percussion cap box is an excellent example of a federal pattern accoutrement issued to US infantrymen during the Civil War. the black leather specimen is in very strong, tight condition and is marked with Newark N.J makers mark "S. H. YOUNG/ & Co/ NEWARK/ NJ" on the inner flap. Dealer Stephen H Young of Broad St was a contractor of accoutrements during the Civil War. A government sub-inspector's large oval stamp is featured on the outer flap and reads "R. White/ U.S / ORD DEPT/SUB INSPECTOR" cap box construction two copper rivits and seam stitching overall which is still strong and very tight. the black leather outer flap is excellent ans exhibits a smooth surface free of flaking. Hinge area of the flap does show very slight crazing. Integral leather closure tab is strong and supple. Inner flap is excellent and retains both "ears" or side covers on the flap. box retains its original nipple pick but has lost its wool fleece pad. backside of the box has two, original leather vertical belt loops sewn on and rivited. Stitching is tight and strong. Another stamping "R" is marked on the backside. This maker Marked and federal government inspected Civil War percussion Cap Box is a fine and wonderful specimen of a union soldier field equipment.
