Question The Annual Big Event Announcement

This is the week after Remembrance Day in Gettysburg, and there is no big event announcement pertaining to the following year. What gives? While I fully realize Napoleonic Tactics, Inc. is long gone, who are the new movers and shakers in the realm of big events?

Will there be a Spotsylvania or Wilderness event in Virginia? What of Franklin in Tennessee? What of Atlanta? Resaca? Cold Harbor? Are major living history events in the works?

Forgive me if this information has been posted elsewhere and I have failed to find it. I no longer subscribe to Camp Chase or Civil War News. Thank you.

http://www.authentic-campaigner.com/...play.php?f=124 These are the only events I usually care for. The "movers and shakers" have been making announcements for events for the last several months for the 2009 season, and will continue to do so, via this and other forums as well as "Camp Chase", "Civil War News", and "Civil War Historian" all have excellent upcoming event calendars. For many of us, "Into the Piney Woods" and "Bummers" are the go-to events for the year. It depends upon if you're looking for that big mega-event, which seems to have fallen by the wayside, or events with some historical substance but less numbers. If Gettysburg and Atlanta from this year are any indicator, that big old-fashioned CW lovefest is going the way of the dinosaur.

Quite frankly Ray...the day of the big National CW gathering of the tribes has ended. In the East there is a Spotsylvania of some sort next spring and the usual Gettysburg and Cedar Creek circuses. Out West...it is a wasteland since the North/South Alliance has died. To my knowledge there are no movers or shakers for big events any longer.

    Default Atlanta is the place

The big event for 2009 is the 145th Atlanta on Labor Day weekend.
Earl Zeckman is the go-to guy and putting in together. Look for some impressive Union numbers since the event seems to have support from several federal organizations, even up in the north.

NSA is gone, but having said that. Cleburne's Division is working on getting the major mainstream organizations together. The West is fine and the future is now. Big events in the West will return, only under different Leadership.

Doug...who do you consider the major mainstream organizations in the West? Both sides?

South, Celburne's-North-your ground. Tell me. Stand of Colors 1200 or so is not a National. You know I shot with 1st.Confederate Division back in the old days. Federal Division, like I said, tell me. Your neck of the woods.

Speaking of Cleburne's, there's talk of hosting a large event at Brices Crossroads/Tupelo in June '09. If this is as well organized as Missionary Ridge was earlier this month, it should be pretty good.

Default The biggest events have already been announced

In a year when the big, big, big events aren't on the schedule, you might consider a better event. Piney Woods will be the best event of the year followed closely by Bummers. Neither will be small.

Not everyone going to Piney Woods is considered to be at the extreme end of the reenacting spectrum. There will be many streamers attending the event who will learn that they can have a great time without without pie, beer, cots, tents and dance bands.

I am hoping to discover some pie at Bummers.

"While the original battle [Gettysburg] may arguably be considered the epicenter of the history of the war, the GAC reenactment is not the epicenter of the hobby. To confuse or equate the two is unfortunate. - Bernard Biederman, 6 July 2012

"Authenticity conflicts occur when reenactors from one end of the spectrum attend events at the other end of the spectrum then try to impose their own standards instead of event standards."

In looking for events to attend as a vendor, I'd say these are the three I'm looking at for 2009.

I'd like to attend Neshaminy's 20th Anniversary and New Market 145th Anniversary, but they are each within a few weeks of Spotsy so I doubt I'll take time off from my real job to attend more than one.
