If you're interested in a Union impression, there are several units in your area, including the 3rd US Regulars and Company B of the 28th Massachusetts (Irish brigade). There's also the one I belong to, the Brady Sharpshooters (16th Michigan). Check out:

Brady's members are mainly in northern Virginia and Maryland and include a number of folks doing systems work, both in and out of government. We're a pretty congenial group and, though not large, tend to have members at a wide range of events over the course of the year. Our current administrative chair lives near you in Lake Ridge.
