57th Infantry Regiment was organized at Salisbury, North Carolina, in July, 1862, with men recruited in the counties of Rowan, Forsyth, Catawba, Cabarrus, Lincoln, and Alamance. Sent to Virginia, the regiment was assigned to General Law's, Hoke's, Godwin's, and W.G. Lewis' brigade. It fought with the Army of Northern Virginia from Fredericksburg to Mine Run, then returned to North Carolina. After serving in the Kinston area the 57th was ordered back to Virginia. It continued the fight at Drewry's Bluff and Cold Harbor, in Early's Shenandoah Valley operations, and around Appomattox. The unit reported 32 killed and 192 wounded at Fredericksburg, had 9 killed and 61 wounded at Chancellorsville and twenty-two percent of the 297 engaged at Gettysburg disabled. At the Rappahannock River in November, 1863, it lost 4 wounded and 292 missing. On April 9, 1865 it surrendered with 6 officers and 74 men of which 31 were armed. The field officers were Colonels Archibald C. Godwin and Hamilton C. Jones, Jr., and Major James A. Craige.

The 57th North Carolina was reactivated by Bill Hartley and Tim McCown in the summer of 2003. After Bill Hartley looked up his own family history and found out that he was the ggg-grandson of 1st Sgt Jonas Hartsell of Co. A 57th North Carolina Troops.

The 57th North Carolina is a family based Civil War Reenacting Unit based in Baltimore City. We try not to travel more then 3 hours from home, unless we vote to go to a special event. We are currently looking for individules who want to perticiapte in the roles of infantry, medical,and civilian. We attend and take part in all areas of the hobby ranging from battle reenactments, to living histories, demonstrations, talks, and parades. You do not have to have past military, or reenacting experience.

What type of membership can you have and how to join the 57th North Carolina. We have two types of membership avalible, a full member and an associate member. A full member is allowed to take part in all aspects of the hobbie. They can go out in to battles, and do living histories. But they must go to 2 events or more per year. An Associate member is allowed to go to living histories, and march with the color guard, but are not allowed to take the field for any battles. This is more for the Civilian reenactors. This is also set aside for people who dont want to reenact at all, but what to have a say in the unit, like people who had family in the 1862-1865 57th NC.

To join the 57th there are only 3 steps you need to do.

1. Read the company bylaws. This is one of the most important things that you will need to do. As they are the rules the 57th NC follows, and they also list the cost of joinning. Once you have done that, you will need to contact the 57th NC to let us know that you wish to join, and what role you want to play in the unit. We can be contacted at anv57regnc@yahoo.com, or call us 410-354-2314 or 443-756-9746. Once that is done, fill out the muster sheet and medical waver and get it in to us. The bylaws, muster sheet and medical form can be downloaded from www.geocities.com/anv57regnc/files. If below the age of 18 a parent must fill out a Under Age of 18 Muster Sheet.

2. Getting in to uniform. Getting you uniform and gear can be costly. But you get your uniform and brogans, we will try to loan you the rest until you can get your own. Any loaner gear that you might need must be requested before an event. A copy of the equipment list is avalible by going to www.geocities.com/anv57regnc/files. We can tell you the best places to get your itmes, and will even go with you to get them if needed. But once you are in uniform you are ready to reenact.

3. Events. Now that you are in ready for the field, you need to look over the events schedule and see what events you want to go to. The event schedule is avalible by going to www.geocities.com/anv57regnc/schedule. You will need to register for these events in advance. If you fail to register, you may not be able to take part in the event. Please also let us know what events you plan on going to.

The only thing we ask is that you try to come to as many events as possible. And until you have been drilled you will not be allowed to take the field. This is only for safety.

Anyone can reenact with the 57th NC. Anyone below the age of 16 is too young to fight, but can still take part in the unit.

If you have never reenacted before or this is something you have been doing for years, all are welcome. And if you are just thinking about it, come out to one of our events, meeting, or living histories, and meet us, and see what it is we do. We are The 1st Maryland Cavalry Battalion CSA, an incorporated, COMBINED, Civil War reenacting group. If you want an oportunity that allows crosstraining between mounted, dismounted and artillery--give us a look. We have: Dismounted skirmish cavalry Company A (Comapny H is in the works), Mounted cavalry Company E, Artillery Battery B, and associated civilian impressions, including the ladies as members of the Maryland Bible Society. We attempt to accurately portray the interaction between dismounted, mounted and artillery. All artillerists are duly certified as are any mounted/dismounted that are crosstrained.

This is a family-friendly unit, headquartered in the Baltimore, Maryland area, with members in Maryland, Pennsylvania and New York; all family members are encouraged to attend events. All Troopers must be 16 or older to carry any type of weapon on the field; all artillerists must be 18 or older; functional musician (bugler) may be 13.

We attempt to authentically portray and represent the camp life of the soldier during the War Between the States. This organization also attempts to demonstrate to the public the many day-to-day duties and responsibilities of the common soldier in the 1st Maryland Cavalry (i.e. Picket Duty, Officer's Call, drill). The troopers in the 1st Maryland Cavalry work to become proficient in the drill manual, Patten’s Cavalry Drill and Saber Exercise for both mounted and dismounted, and Patten’s Cavalry Drill, Supplement for the manual of arms. Every attempt will be made by all military personnel to try and recreate the military atmosphere in camp, with an emphasis on 1860's military customs, traditions, and protocol. Members are also highly encouraged to do first person impressions at events, whenever possible.

The 1st Maryland seeks to emulate the social customs of the 19th Century in camp and in the field. Men are expected to be gentlemen; women are expected to be ladies; children are to be obedient and to respect their elders and shall be protected by adult members of the unit. Prejudice has no place in the 1st Maryland, neither that of race, sex, creed, or heritage. Equal respect is to be extended to all persons and reenactors regardless of the color of their uniform.

Another unit you may wish to consider is the 17th Virginia Infantry, Co. H/ Corse's Staff. We portray the staff of Col. Montgomery Dent Corse (Promoted to Brig. Gen after Second Manassas) as well as an infantry unit.

The 17th Virginia Infantry was formed at Manassas from militia units from Northern Virginia shortly after the Federals crossed the Potomac. They were nicknamed the "Bloody 17th" because of the damage they inflicted and the losses they took during the war. They were assigned to Longstreet's Corp and saw action in most of the major campaigns in the eastern theater (with the exception of Gettysburg).

Our members hail from Central Maryland and Northern Virginia. We enjoy living history and reenacting, small town events to the BIGGIES. We are family oriented with civilians and children being an important part of our activities.

In my mainstream battalion, to become a staff member you have to work your way up through the ranks to a position of responsibilty in a company before you are eligible to be elected to a battlion staff position. That might not be as easy of a job as finding a group that will take you on as a staff officer from the get go but I'd bet that is the most common way of becoming a staff officer
