Hi, all. Just wanted to share some medical equipment photos I came across this past week on the Alex Peck Medical Antiques website. He has tons of pics of period equipment to paruse through. Free free to post any photos you might have for the rest of us to view. The first pic is a close up of another covered bottle with period Dunton label. The second one I uploaded is a Tiemann c1860 first aid kit. Looks like it has a small surgical kit, tourniquets, various bottles of medicine, and bandages. The bandages in particular caught my eye, because they look like they aren't pinned but rather held together with a adhesive label with what I assume is the width of the bandage written on it. Also take a close look at the chloroform and spirits hartshorn bottles - I assume they have stopper tops covered in fabric or thin leather and tied to prevent spillage, or to prevent the leakage of fumes? Has anyone ever come across this before? Third pic is to a picture of a painted tin Dammann hospital dept. pannier.

I, too had found the photos on the Alex Peck site, and I was especially excited to have found the photo of the Tiemann first aid kit. I set out on a six-month search for small, oval gummed stickers or seals because I'd recalled seeing a whole box of them in my grandmother's desk when I was small. Unfortunately, the contents of the desk got discarded twenty-four years ago! The product was by the Dennison label company. After an unsuccessful search, I was ready to make my own seals when I discovered the aforementioned US Sanitary Commission Bulletin in which the use of two small pins was mentioned as the appropriate appliance for fastening. Excellent bit of sleuthing young man!

Have you ever come across dimensions for those bandage labels? based on the size of the bandages in the first aid kit, I'd say about 3/4" long by 1/2" wide maybe? I'm searching right now for a label design place online that might be able to reproduce these in bulk (unless anyone knows of a place that makes oval shaped labels or stickers that small already...) Is that a green or light blue line around the border, or maybe a darker blue that has faded to a lighter color over time? I did check the Avery/Dennison label company, but they don't make oval stickers that small, not that I could find, anyway...

Also, along the lines of a bandage label, I've been able to reproduce with MSWord the Jacob Dunton bottle label seen on the bottle in the first post of this thread, and the bandage roll label seen on the Sullivan Press site and the "for sale" examples shown on the Two Flags Sutlery site. Email me and I can send them as attachments if anyone is interested in receiving them. I think the cool thing about those is that you can basically type in whatever med you want on the bottle label without having to purchase individual labels from someone else. They are kinda jury-rigged with text boxes, so I'm in the process of trying to figure out how to multiply them on a single sheet of paper, w/o copying them on a copy machine over and over until I have a full sheet. The gummed labels that I recall seeing were probably one-half inch wide and proportionately tall. If I recall correctly, I believe that they also had a fine line around the edge. I, too, couldn't determine whether the fine line in the Alex Peck photo was either blue or green. Given the popularity of scrapbooking, I've scoured the appropriate aisles at Hobby Lobby, Michaels, and JoAnn Crafts even though I recognize that such labels would be self-adhesive rather than a water-activated product. I've also been at various websites: DickBlick, Craft Cove (?), and several scrapbooking sites. I also scour antique malls for vintage items. The labels that are the sort of item that Martha Stewart Crafts should include, but I haven't seen any through that source. MS has a number of other small labels but none such as we need. I shall continue to look. I've also looked for a small, oval hand punch, but thus far, I've only found circles as well as scalloped squares that have more of a postage stamp look. My search on the punch continues, as well. Gumming the paper labels won't be a problem; one could use methyl cellulose, gum arabic, mucilage, etc.

The oval stickers should not be too much of a problem. You can coat the back of a sheet of paper with some lick and stick glue and let dry, there are numerous recipes on the web. Actually there might even be a period recipe for this type of adhesive, but the old brain just can't remember where I saw it. 8( Then cut them out with a small oval 1/2" paper punch. (I'm guesstimating the size by the picture)
