Frock Coat Boot Camp: September 13-14

Two people have bailed on my Frock Coat Boot Camp and while it's short notice, I thought I'd open the registration up again.

Where will the workshop be?: The address is below, you can mapquest the address, but if you need directions, please let me know and I can e-mail them to you.

What time will I need to be there? The workshop begins promptly at 9am and ends at 5pm each day. This’ll give us 16 hours of construction time to get going on this project

How will the workshop work? Each of you will do all the pressing and hand work on your coats, I’ll be set up in the center of the room and will do all the machine work. You can bring a machine if you wish, but there is really no need to lug one around as I’m confident I can do all the machine work on all 10 coats.

How much will it cost? $300.00

What do I get for that money? Pre-cut frock coat kit (including trim, buttons and hooks-n-eyes), thread, instruction and patience to help guide you through this project.

What do the participants need to bring?: Please bring hand sewing needles, iron, ironing board, 6” ruler, chalk, seam ripper, a sharp pair of scissors, pins. There will be no need to bring a sewing machine. I’ll do all the machine work on the all the coats.

If I’m hungry, will you feed me?: I’ll supply lunch both days, plus I’ll have a cooler of water and sodas to keep you occupied. If you’re a veggie, please let me know so I can order something special for you. You’re on your own for dinner on Saturday night, but I thought it would be nice if we can all go out to one of the local pubs for dinner.

Anything else? Yes, please bring cameras, note pads or any other recording device you wish to bring. If you ever plan on making a second frock coat, you’ll need all the documentation you can get.

Can I be special?: If you are interested in making something other than a standard infantry frock coat, please let me know. If you want a Musician’s coats, hospital steward, engineer, officer, heavy artillery or USMC I need to know by August 29th as I’m shopping for all the trims and fabric on the 30th.

Thanks for the compliment Steve, that was really nice of you even after I made you wait over two years for the coat.

I do love making these coats and they are with out a doubt the most detailed and difficult garments from the mid-19th C., that's why I'm hoping that I can teach a new crop of people how to assemble them, hopefully we'll soon have more sources for these coats besides a slow poke like me.

BTW: This class isn't going to be cancelled. I'm going to host this class if only one of the original 10 show up. I've paid for the conference room space, I've paid for the fabric for 10 coats, I've ordered all the food for the weekend and I'm ready to sew like the wind! I really love these workshops and only wish my schedule allowed me to do more of them.

Some sizes are. I'm working on a run of them now and all orders should be done by July 15 if we don't have them on hand. It's always a good idea to e-mail me first if you are concerned about delivery time.

For instance, I got two orders today. One was for a 42 chest which will be mailed out on Monday, the other for a 60 chest which I'll need to cut out, but that should be done by 7/15.

FYI: Regarding your trowsers, I have them almost done, I just need to attach the waistband and finish the buttonholes. Sorry for the delay.

Unanswered phone calls or e-mails, sounds familiar. You may have same luck as me. Posting a public complaint seemed to get me a refund the next day. He was so busy ignoring questions about his frock coat workshop that he hasn't had time to ignore your order.

This should come at no suprise to anyone on these boards. I suppose it is just the way Chris works. [deletion - THP; supposition about a vendor] My advice would be to get your items from somewhere else, or just be ready to wait. Chris makes great stuff, you just have to wait from time to time.

I think That if I could get down (from Maine) there even with gas included for the ride it would still be cheaper than paying full price for a frock from a quality vendor. I still have CJ's lined sack for two years and it will have many more added to it!!!
