    Tin cups

    All,
I've taken to carrying my cup inside of my haversack. I put items like coffee and sugar pokes inside the cup and it doesn't take up too much more room.
When I wore my cup on the outside of my...

    There's always been campaigners

    All,
The term campaigner is relative. If it means having a great impression, being able to move camp at a moment's notice, and be well-versed in drill, material culture and field craft, the National...

    Constructive Remarks

    Fellows,
Here are some comments that came directly from guys in my home battalion. These are easy and do not place blame on anyone, but might be the ticket to helping some of the problems. I was...

    Trappings of finery

It is often surprising when we hear of late-war accounts people adhering to the pomp and circumstance of early-war practices.
The soldiers did evolve in their experiences. However, the United States...
  8. Bugle calls

    I totally agree with John.
Try to learn as many as you can. I started the hobby as a bugler and used to get frustrated when people didn't know the basic calls.
Making up lyrics does help. However,...
  9. Pickett's Charge

    Marc,
I have invited the SS to come participate with the 3rd USV for Pickett's Charge. We will be portraying the 14th CT, who was partially armed with Sharp's Rifles. Their left was anchored of the...

    That's Great!

It looks like you'll have the only division at the event.

The First Division has four battalions.
The Second Division is going to the other event. Maybe you'll get a battalion of pick ups.
    The...

    Fire Grates

    All,
Fire grates used at living history events have been a pet peeve of mine for years.

The armies used a wide variety of methods and devices for cooking food over the camp fires. I've seen...

    English Cloth

    All,
There's been a great deal of interest in the reenacting community in acquiring correct English cloth (broadcloth or kersey) for mid-late war Confederate clothing. There has been several vendors...

    From a regimental

    All,
This is taken from "Under the Red Patch, the Story of the 63rd Pennsylvania." The day was June 24th, 1862 right in front of Richmond, before the Seven Days' Battles.

    My take

First, the GAC is not a reenacting organization, but a corporate one with the goal of having an event simply to attract $$$ to Adams County.
Second, they have put it on for years and have had...

    Bga

The USV voted to attend the BGA event.
That's about 1/3 of the Federals here in the east. Another 1/3 has committed to do the same. But they will speak for themselves.
I will not go to a GAC event....
