They are just tree limbs with a board mounted on top. You really don't get much simpler than that.

Here are a couple of more pictures of the Barbette carriage showing the recoil positions of the gun. Everything is funtional including the threaded wood leveling screw. It just does not fire.

Here is a 1/5 scale Dictator mortar that I did entirely out of wood.
The original "Dictator" had a barrel that weighed 17,000 lbs.!
