Has anyone looked into the CS medical depot system and what was actually being made? Where it was being made? Or where it was being shipped?

I just pulled records from the CMSR of Julien J. Chisolm and found a very interesting document specifying what was produced in the 3rd quarter of 1863 at the Columbia Depot. Once I get a chance I will post the transcription. It not only lists what was produced but what materials and what quantities were needed for produce that number for the quarter.

That's pretty cool. Looks like it's an example of what we were talking about in the other thread (http://www.cwreenactors.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8663), indigenous plants being used either as substitutes or as a more available option by the south.

Extr Spigelia Co fl--pinkroot, for, um, worms? Was that a big enough problem among soldiers, or was it being used as a substitute for something else?

Pulv Gillena Trifol--American ipecac, substitute for guess what.

Syr Pruni Virgin
Extr Prunus Virgin--wild cherry. Like may apple below, not really a substitute, but a good indigenous medicine in its own right

Tinct Humulus Lup--hops. So, um, why not just grow poppies? Of course hops were already cultivated and more available. Still, I'd say it'd be best used as a mild opium substitute.

Extr Podophyllum
Resin Podophylii--may apple, not really a substitute, but more convenient than, say, jalap from Mexico

Extr Cornus Flor Co Fl.--dogwood substituted for quinine
