Friends,
While at Mt. Vernon today my husband noticed some etchings in the bricks that make up the "New Tomb" of George and Martha Washington. Pressed for time (school field trip Chaperone) he was only able to snap a few pics. As you can see one etching is "A.R. 1861" , while another clearly says "J.L. Chamberlain", et al. Has anyone any research on this, such as the veracity, possible date of creation, etc.? We hope to get back to try and distinguish the other graffiti. Supposedly it was discovered when old, overgrown ivy was pulled off the tomb wall. Fascinating stuff...
