I’m attaching a letter I will be sending out to the unit representatives that have attended over the years. I’m sending this out via US Mail because so many emails have bounced back… I’m concerned about whether they’re getting blocked since it was a mass email I sent… and whether we’ll have much participation… I’ll be sending the registration form as well, so I’m attaching that as well.

We really need/want a strong turnout because the fort will be filmed and featured in the Hampton Roads award-winning series on Historic American Wars on the Peninsula. We’re the final feature in the series so we really want to give them a great show!

I’m very concerned about the lack of registrations we’ve received at this point. It’s always a scary thing just before the early registration deadline but the numbers are ridiculously low this year… except for the big guns… they’re good! a few, very few cavalry and hardly any infantry…please help spread the word that we need and want them!!

New Market is the same weekend and we’ve lost a couple of sutlers who have inquired about the event to the NM event. Please let your favorite sutlers know about the web site if they can and want to attend.

I have Fort Pocahontas flyers but did not order as many this year and will be glad to send those to whoever can use them and get them out to related businesses to help advertise. However, it is also on the web site for you to print.

Thanks to all for your help getting this year’s event together!

Any one wishing to come please email springfield63@hotmail.com and I will forward your info. Or call the above number or email Joe as well. This years battle is being filmed and a strong turn out would be great. The fort is on the original site and backs up to James river and is worth the weekend. Also if there are any sutlers that would like to come please do and let them know. You will find all info needed on the website..Thank you .

Dear Unit Representative,

The Fort Pocahontas Planning Committee and I wish to invite you and your unit to attend the 10th Annual Living History and Reenactment of the Action at Wilson's Wharf, known as Fort Pocahontas, May 18-20, 2007. This once forgotten fort will once again be recreated through your support marking the 10th consecutive year of reenacting this historic event that took place at Fort Pocahontas on May 24, 1864.

Many people have continued to work on the preservation of the site since the first event in many ways. By participating in the events and programming, by volunteering talent and time, and developing the site construction of the gun platform and the signal tower construction, everyone has worked together. The planning committee endeavors to provide a safe historically based event that offers interest for the reenactors and spectators while preserving this unique Civil War fort.

Many thanks go to Joe Funk, Event Commander and Union Commander; Joe Ferguson, Cavalry Commander; Tim Smith, Confederate Commander and Wayne Womble, Artillery Commander for their unfailing and continued support over the past 10 years. There are several units and/or reenactors who have participated in the past 10 years and would like to thank them as well.

Registration is open to Union and Confederate military impressions, especially those portraying U.S. Colored Troops. The presence of the USCTs is particularly important to the history of the site and therefore, the registration fees are waived for members of the USCT units. This year’s event will feature The Action at Wilson’s Wharf on both Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. Please make every effort to represent your unit on both days to provide the best event possible.

A strong artillery performance is needed for both battles and the Saturday evening nightfire. Bounties will be offered to the first four full size guns registered for a fee of $150 per gun. As always, sutlers are welcome and hope they will enjoy being closer to the spectator tent and the action.

Dinner will not be available through a vendor this year unless a sutler is able to provide that service – please forward any contacts regarding any food sutlery to my attention so he/she may be invited to join the event. Bill’s Hot Dog vendor will be attending again. The evening entertainment will be an informal musical gala graciously lead by the musicians from the 69th Pennsylvania followed by the nightfire and signal tower demonstration beginning at dusk.

The registration forms and fees should be sent in by May 4, for the pre-registration fee of $10 per adult. Free for children under 12 years old. After May 5, the registration fee is $15 per person. A registration form is enclosed and additional forms may be found on the updated web site at www.fortpocahontas.org, including the registration form, itinerary and rules and regulations, as well as a press release and flyer. Please feel free to print the flyer and distribute to businesses, spectators or at related events to help promote this event. Thanks for your help!

Questions or inquiries about the reenactment may be made to Event Commander, Joe Funk by email at gweitzel@prodigy.net. Questions about registration may be made to Kay Tyler, Event Administrator, ktyler@sherwoodforest.org or by calling (804) 829-9722 or (804) 358-6248. All participating units will receive registration confirmation by email (if available) or US mail prior to the event.

Best regards,

Harrison Ruffin Tyler
