There was a famous Southerner Mathilde Deslonde Slidell who married John Slidell (Trent Affair) who carried a box of Louisiana soil with her to England and France; loving New Orleans she wanted it in order to remain close to home. We plan on using it at the Confederate Cemetery at Richmond.

"Southern" or "Confederate"? If the former, what determines southernness? Were some states that are Southern currently, Southern in 1860? What of regions within Southern states that may have self-identified as Western, or mountain during the war and/or currently? Is southernness a factor of language, geography, climate, agriculture, the presence of slavery in 1860? All of these have been put forth as markers of that attribute.

If this is still going on, I can get you hooked up with some from North Carolina.

In regards to another question in this thread (the one about what constitutes a "Southern" state), which specific states are you needing soil for. (I am assuming, based upon your post, that you will be sprinkling dirt from their home states over the buried soldiers' graves at the cemetery.)

You still need any from North Carolina?
(I could be mean and skim some off the grave of the Union soldier who died at my house and is buried accross the road)
No, I won't do that, but let me know if you haven't yet gotten NC.

Would you then be looking for states south of the Mason Dixon Line and slave states to include Md. Mo. Ky. De. and how about Ok. since it was claimed by the confederacy.

Well I have a whole pile of fine Arizona soil in my back yard. I can send some to you...then I don't have to sneak it out in the recycle bin a little at a time.
Arizona was, after all, a Confederate territory......at least the bottom half of what is now the state.
