I have 2 bayonets, both are supposed to be for an Enfield rifle...

one is slightly thinner and longer. Does anyone know what the length is for a proper bayonet? (these are repro bayonets)

A quick Google search of "1853 Enfield bayonet length" brought up:

along with many other possible sites.

Ditch the repro rubber-metal bayonets and get a beat up original to use, the repos bear no resemblance whatsoever to proper enfield bayonets. the only repros I've seen that look right are the special ones blockade runner is selling, though I can't comment on their hardness.

The Blockade Runner "de-farbed" bayonet is a copy of an original that I loaned them, made by the Birmingham maker GEORGE SALTER. This repro is "better" than the usual made in India fare, but I would still try to find a decent original P53 bayonet on eBay or one of the WTS threads on this or the other Forum. Watch out for those marked E over two lines of numbers. Those are mostly British Army "Enfield" bayonets with no likely US Civil War provenance.

If you don't want to use an original, and there are valid reasons not to, the BR enfield bayonet is a good choice. The steel is better, the socket is blued and they have both Armi Sport and Euroarms sized sockets so you know (at least) it will fit your musket.

I recently bought one of their "Salter" bayonets. MUCH better quality than my other one. It is also longer and sturder. I am very pleased with it.

I purchased a Blockade Runner Salter bayonet and they fitted the bayonet socket to the muzzle of my defarbed P53, 3-band Enfield rifle musket which I also purchased from them. The Enfield bayonet offered by Blockade Runner has a blued socket just like the originals and the blade from bolster to tip is the regulation length of 16-1/2" . I also purchased a English scabbard that fits their 16-1/2" Enfield bayonet from Blockade Runner...However I purchased the bayonet frog from C&D Jernigan. The C&D Jarnigan Confederate style Enfield frog (no buckle), catalog number ENF2601, is a better fit and quality than the Blockade Runner frog.

It is always a good idea to purchase the bayonet scabbard and the bayonet from the same supplier and ask them to guarantee the fit.

I buy all my leather from Nick Duvall. There is no vendor making better accouterments (in my opinion) He guarantees a perfect fit on his scabbards

I also Defarbed and blued my own (Itallian) bayonet. I also have the "salter" stamp. (I am a tool and die maker) Gives me something to do at work!

I've asked this question before, but does anyone know anything about a Enfield bayonet maker named J. Deeley?

Found this at http://www.gunbooks.co.uk/cat-rifles.cfm:

B19) SPECIFICATION OF JOHN DEELEY, THE YOUNGER, JAMES SIMEON EDGE, THE YOUNGER. SLIDING BLOCK BREECH-LOADING SMALL ARMS. A.D. 1881, 21ST MARCH NO. 1241. The Commissioners of Patents, 1881, 29cm x 19cm, 5 pages of text in English, plus 2 sheets of line drawings of internals of the Improvements in Sliding Block Breech-loading Small Arms, specification, covers frayed and delicate but sewn together, Good £35.00

There are many web references to "Anson and Deely" boxlock (hammerless)action on shotguns when they worked for a company named Wesley Richards & Co., and a "Deeley patent ejector system".

Nothing on a Deeley making bayonets, though.

His first name may well be John.

Hello. I checked this reference out. maybe I knew this but it was refreshing. The difference is primarily the pronounced shoulder or thicker shaft portion? I have this on mine and its not from blockade runner or if so it is a older one. are there some other okay reproductions out there? also couldnt this be simulated by a little grinding on the wheel?
