Hello all,I am trying to find out what type and colors of materials I could use to make a civilian/early war over shirt. If any of you fine folks could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

Wool twill - sumac dyed by Ben Tart or his cotton jean......is what I would use.
Alternatively extant samples have been made from
linsey-woolsey
cotton jean
cassimere
flannels

David, I imagine you are not in an awful hurry for this. Wait up a few weeks, and at Selma I'll bring a sample of some grand linsey-woolsey material I acquired recently from 96 Storehouse.
The warp is a natural unbleached linen, the weft is a fine light brown wool spun in the grease. The sett is a bit looser that one would normally think for a plain weave, which makes this fabric breathable, yet more water repellant than most, as the lanolin remains in the wool.
