Nice vest. I'm a 40 and may jump at it. But for now, what's wrong with the hat? It's a common style for the 1860's. In the first pic it looks like there may be some colorful feathers stuck in the hat band on the left side; if so, tell your brother to get rid of them, they're totally wrong for the 19th century.

I agree that is a very..very nice vest. If it was a smaller size I would jump on it too.

But for now, what's wrong with the hat?

A lot of the soldiers wear this kind of hat, but to me, it does not look like a polished gentleman’s hat. Plus we have a picture of us together the same day, and with one eye squinted in the sun and a slight closed lips smile, he looks like he is saying, “I just dare you to take one step closer to my girl.” Every time I see the hat it reminds me of that picture. The hat in the bottom picture just looks more like a proper gentleman - not someone who is ready to draw his pistol.

I am fixing to cut out another vest. I could easily make a size 38 next.

Actually, I thought they were the same hat. I see the difference now.

Beware of making period fashion decisions based on your modern opinions - what looks odd or even weird to us was all the rage at some time. For instance, I've seen hats, caps and kepis that appear three sizes too small and perched on the very top of the wearer's head in a lot of period photos, too many for it to be coincidence.

They're very nice but I don't think it would work with my impression right now. I'm sort of in limbo with my impression. I'm still working on it and right now its leaning more towards farm boy then southern city boy. Maybe I'm way off here but the vest you made seems too fancy for a farm boy impression. I would think that velvet and sateen would have been expensive for the time and might have been more common in the more educated richer cities then the poor rural southern farmlands.

Yeah, not exactly a vest you would wear while plowing the back forty.

This vest is now available in size 46. Other sizes can be made, however, only the two which are already make (sizes 40 and 46) will be lined with sold black organic cotton.

Mlle. Hansard,

I've just checked my account and, a bit surprisingly, there's still some money left in it. Is the size 40 vest still available?

I have noticed the same thing! When I started looking closely at the hat in relation to the wearers' ears in period photos, I realized that many are far higher on the head than we are accustomed to wearing hats today. I once sold a derby because it seemed too small, but I have often berated myself for it.
