Hello everyone, I have a quick question, I was wondering if there was any way or any equipment to transform a normal belt into a sword belt.
I know i would be better off with a sword belt, and I do plan to buy one, but right now money is tight with gas, and such and on top of that my son :D was just born on Sunday night, so anyway I am just looking for an interim solution.... thanks so much

John,
First off congrats on the birth of your child! Second, what kind of belt are you working with and what are you wanting to convert it to? Its possible I guess but it depends on what you got and what you are trying to do.

for the Congrats I am currently working with a normal belt that I have my gun holster on, it is a leather belt. Nothing fancy... was a sutler buy a few months ago, before I was appointed chaplain.

I depends on the type sword you want to hang. A heavy cavalry saber requires hangers and a Sam Brown strap (over the sholder) to hold up your waist belt. A artillery short sword or infantry Confederate NCO saber can be hung from a belt wth a frog. The artillery saber takes a special frog and the Confederate NCO sabre can use a British Enfield bayonet scabbard frog. A Federal infantry NCO saber is usually hung from a baldric.
The waist belt frogs are less expensive than a putting together a cavalry sword belt rig even if you already have the belt.

Transformation of the belt is not a new thing. It was very common during the war. Usually straps of leather were sewn directly to an existing belt. There is one I really like in Mullinax's buckle book. It is a civilian type sqaure buckle with the staps sewn on to convert it to a sabre belt. Really cool. I think CS EoG has a couple converted belts as well!

I would go with out a side arm or sword. Your job is to look after the soldier’s spiritual well being not to fight with them. To many “Reenactor” chaplains are armed to the teeth! This would also save you money that you can send on your little one. They can burn money faster then a Authentic Frock coat.

Thank you for all the suggestions I will certainly look at the conversion kit. And I am also a gun commander as well, since I own one of our pieces. So I perform more than one function in the unit.....And you are right, the little ones an burn money fast, and we have 2 others so things are even tighter.....
