While the Civil War did not result in a bi-racial society in the South (that would not start occurring until after the Civil Right Reforms of the 1960's with the result that the South went from Democratic to Republican), the Reconstruction did win a lot for the Northern blacks. Remember, prior to the war, the actual legal rights of most Northern and Midwestern blacks were no better than that of the Southern blacks of the 1880's.

Stephen Budiansky stated during the radio program that winners write the history and that white Southerners won the insurgency against the Federal government.

I've done some study on this, my question is; did anyone really win? Even though Republicans controlled Congress and the Presidency well into the 1880's; after that, it seemed that Southerners made an astounding comeback on the state and national level. I would be interested in reading this new book.
