Question for the drummers

I picked up a reproduction drum in Gettysburg a couple of years ago, and My oldest son is thinking of becoming a drummer. The problem is: there are no snares on the bottom of this drum. It sounds like a tom-tom. Can anyone recomend a place that sells period appropriate snares? Also, any pictures of period snares would be greatly appreciated. I've looked at TONS of pictures online, and none of them showed what the snares looked like.
