I have three books very useful to all living historians, but especially aimed at civilians:

1.) Martine's Hand-Book of Etiquette & Guide to True Politeness by Arthur Martine. Though published in 1866, this book is one of the best sources for how a gentleman or lady of our period would be expected to comport themselves. Topics include conversation ("In a mixed company, never speak to your friend of a matter the rest do not understand, unless it is something you can explain to them"), habits at table ("It is considered vulgar to take soup or fish twice"), dress ("A well-dressed man does not require so much as an extensive as a varied wardrobe"), etc. Used but very good condition (small cover stains). Paperback; $15 new, asking $10.

2.) The Children of Pride: A True Story of Georgia & the Civil War (abridged edition), ed. by Robert Manson Myers. The letters of the Rev. Dr. Charles Colcock Jones and family 1860-1868. A fascinating account of one family's journey through the crucible. In very good to fine condition (only some tears on the dust jacket). Hardcover; $28 new, asking $10.

3.) Amercia in 1857: A Nation on the Brink by Kenneth M. Stampp. One of America's great historians of slavery (The Peculiar Institution), Stampp turns his great skill to the year when the Buchanan presidency was coming apart, the South was on the verge of secession, the SS Central America with 21 tons of gold sinks off the coast with a loss of 400 lives, etc. A GREAT background read, especially for the financial panic that year which ruined thousands of Americans and made the rest as nervous as survivors of our Great Depression were. Paperback, Very good condition. $28 new, asking $10
