With the end of each school year I give my outging 8th grade a reading list for the summer. This year I want to include a movie list as well. Could you send in suggestions to this list, please (my list is a work in progress).

"Glory"
"Gettysburg"
"Ride with the Devil"
"Wicked Spring"
"North and South"

Nearly all of the students are 14(or older) so I send the parents a letter explaining some of these films have graphic violence and foul language. Some are rated "R", thus the parents will be the final judge if the children watch the films. I am looking for the type of film the child can get at the local video store and maybe actually learn something from watching them.

Thanks for any help:

Not sure what you can learn from any CW movie I've seen that you can't get in a book. What about the Ken Burn's series?

Gettysburg Three Days of Destiny was the all time WORST Civil War movie ever.

Dear Sir,
Although "Ride with the Devil " stars Toby McGuire ( "Spiderman" ), and Jewel to attract the young folks , "The Red Badge of Courage " is a superb film and quite short . Alas it is in balck and white and the current generation may find that disturbing ( but it is short ). It is also based on a classic lf American literature but once again, not a big selling point to most kids.
All for the old flag and good luck ,

The Blue and The Gray - Very good(a tv series)
The General - with Buster Keaton (For some laughs)
Johnny Shiloh - Walt Disney movie
The Last Outpost - with Ronald Reagan
Shenandoah - Jimmy Stewart

Some Civil War in it:
The Good,The Bad and The Ugly
The Outlaw Josey Wales

2 that are very questionable because of the gore and sex
Gangs of New York
Cold Mountain
