I'm trying to find the title of a book I saw on the 1853 Enfield, its markings and issues regarding de-farbing it. I had seen it it mentioned on some of the forums but searches haven't come up with the correct title. Does anyone know of the book and where it might be purchased?

Hallo!

I am not sure what you are thinking of...

For "history" there is THE BRITISH SOLDIER'S FIREARM: FROM SMOOTHBORE TO SMALLBORE 1850-1864 by C.H. Roads

For "de-farbing" there is the seminal bible... AUTHENTICIZING YOUR REPRODUCTION ENFILED monograph by Geoffrey Walden.

and

THE CIVIL WAR MUSKET: A HANDBOOK FOR HISTORICAL ACCURACY: LOCK, STOCK, AND BARREL by Craig Barry.

Plus some "How To" posts in the past here and on the AC Board.

Curt,

Thank you. The book I was thinking of is the one by Craig Barry. I had seen it but couldn't recall the author or title.

The book is titled "The Civil War Musket: A Handbook for Historical Accuracy" and it is available from The Watchdog Civil War Quarterly (www.watchdogreview.com) or gwjchris@earthlink.net. The Camp Chase Gazette, Regimental Quartermaster, Cedar Creek Supply Depot, Fall Creek Sutler and others carry it and usually have copies available at events.

All proceeds go to battlefield preservation.

I recently got this book and it also covers Springfields. For the price it may save you some bucks on your next musket.
