Hi
I am currently taking a Historical Methodology/Writing course at George Mason University, and am writing my term paper on historical methodologies used in Civil War reenacting. I wrote up a survey (featured below) to get input from Civil War reenactors/living historians.
At the end of the survey I ask for (optional) name, unit and whether I can use your name in the paper. This mostly concerns how I am going to footnote information that I glean from the surveys.
Feel free to e-mail or PM the results to me.
The survey:
Please return to bjurek1@gmu.edu by 26 November.
What was your motivation when you began Civil War reenacting?
If you've been reenacting for awhile, has your motivation changed over the course of your time in the hobby?
Would you consider yourself to be: 1) Mainstream 2) Progressive/Campaigner 3) Hardcore? Explain.
Has this approach changed over your time reenacting?
What type of preparation do you do prior reenactments, living histories, tacticals, etc.?
Do you do any other types of reenacting (WWII, WWI, Rev War, etc.)? Did you start prior to or after you began Civil War reenacting? Do you apply the same standards as far as your portrayal and research for events?
How important is the authenticity of your uniform and equipment (i.e.-do you use museum quality material or generic sutler fare)? How are you affected by the uniform/equipment standards of others?
Do you reenact Federal or Confederate? Why did you choose to portray this side? Would you portray the other side? How much do identify with the contemporary (1860s) politics in your portrayal?
What do you feel that you personally get out of reenacting?
Do you see conflicts between the different approaches (i.e.-mainstream v. progressive) to reenacting?
If you are no longer actively reenacting, why did you stop?
Please provide any additional comments you may have about reenacting, the Civil War, or the observance of history in America today?
