Just read "In Camp and Battle with the Washington Artillery of New Orleans ", by Wm.Miller Owen , LSU Press originally pub. 1885.
In it he relates soldiers playing euchre ,cribbage and chess, drinking juleps made with cognac and reciting Poe's poem "The Raven".
On page 279 he states while writing about the Battle of Chickamauga :
"Our division , in advancing , passes the spot where General Bragg is seated upon his horse on the Chattanooga Road . He looks pale and careworn , his features rendered more haggard by the white Havelock he wears over his cap and neck ."
This on Set. 20th 1863 not 1861 !
Truth is stranger than ficiton and ever more strangerer when it's Braxton Bragg .
