Does anybody have one of these? Has anyone seen one at an event on someone?

How popular were these during the early to mid 19th century?

Actually, there exists a superb repro of an orginal military cape imported from France that was owned by a New York Lieutenant. A large shipment of these came in to New York and were presented as prizes in an AoP drill competition in late 1861. Two of the originals survive today and are made from a blue gray kersey with 3 buttons. The cape reaches about to one's elbows and it is the single most versatile garment I own. Wear it at night and in the morning, then fold up in the knapsack on the march. Chris Daley researched it, examined and copied the original. I am not sure if he still has any in stock.

Would this be for civilian wear or military?

It looks live a very nice garment.

Fran

I am having this made strictly for civilian. I personally cannot see using this in the field, besides, this Iverness Coat is just a tad more expensive than a greatcoat. I am going to use it just for walking around and doing other "civilian things."

I very seldom use a greatcoat even for military. I think {I know,I don't get paid to think} that using a greatcoat especially for Confederate impression is way over done. How many blue greatcoats do you see being used by both sides during a weekend event? I use blankets as a coat at cold weather events, with a blanket pin. When I do a Federal impression then of course I use my Greatcoat.

Sir,

While the use of blue federal overcoats may be over-represented for the south, there are many surviving confederate overfrocks, overcoats, and larger baggier sackcoats with CS provenance. Not to mention the images, quartermaster records, and newspaper/diary accounts that show the use of warmer coats for Confederate Soldiers.

I would ammend your statement to say something like; The use of blue federal overcoats are way over-represented in the Confederate Ranks.

Good Confederate overclothing is something very needed in the hobby!

Thank you Paul.

I will amend my previous statement.

What I was thinking and what I typed didn't come out the same. I know that there were Greatcoats other than Blue being worn during the war.
