I have been making blanks for my 44-40 Spencer out of cut down 410 shotgun shells.
I was at a reenactment last weekend and one of the reenactors had a Henry in .45 LC that he was shooting. We got to talking and he told me that he was using 5 in 1 brass for his blanks and they were costing him about 40 cents each. I suggested that we try my blanks in his gun and the result was that they cycled, fired and ejected fine. I pass this along to anyone else that uses a Henry and wants to reduce the cost of blanks.
If I can pick up used 410 hulls from the Skeet field then I figure they cost about 10 cents each to make.
An explanation as to how to make the blanks can be found in the Spencer article I wrote last month and is on the web at. http://www.9thnycavalry.webeditor.com/spencer_article.html
The 410 blanks are a little harder to make than the ones using the 5 in 1 brass, but what else to you have to do all winter?
