Hello,

I am in need of a source for 100% Wool in mixed-gray in order to make up a pair of trousers. Does anyone know of a good source for yard goods?

Thanks,

Cole Jones

Gentlemen - a family of five fine young men (ages 15-20) have joined my husband's unit (5th MN Vol. Inf.) as musicians. They have all constructed their own sack coats thus far (lucky mother!) from authentic patterns and they did amazingly accurate jobs. They were able to find the correct color and weight at a local shop. They are now turning their attention to trousers whose colors are eluding them. While I have no doubt that the cloth in the previous posts is the finest available, at ~2 yards per boy x 5 boys, that comes out somewhere in the neighborhood of $350, which is not possible for them. Does anyone have suggestions for where they can obtain good wool, perhaps not the best, for less money? I have spent the last hour searching the various forums (fora?) without success.

Kindest regards,
Joanna Jones

theres still woolrich wool out there. its 100%. they say its made just like it was back in 1830 and later, but since they no longer make it in woolrich, but in florida... i wonder if it really is.

woolrich wool varies in colours and in price. if anyone wants i can take a little jaunt to the store and take pics and get prices. if you want the actual colours, they are $24.95 a yd and are the most expensive (you can buy online, but only by the bolt!), they do have tons of other colours that are less than that. i am also able to get remnants (1 1/2yds to 2 yds) for a lot cheaper... those also vary in price.

Just note that Woolrich wool has a small amount of synthetic fiber and is not 100% wool. Not that at least the kersey can't be used because its appearance is almost identical to the original, and is acceptable even most many from the more authentic part of the hobby because it has a more accurate look than other kerseys out there. At the Stony Brook Co./Chris Sullivan website he sells sky blue kersey woolrich for $20.50. You've got to have kersey weave wool for U.S. trousers so I suspect that woolrich is the cheapest you will find.

As to the first request, wouldn't jeans wool be more accurate for CS trousers most of the war? BEn Tart has his naturally-colored jeans for $18 a yd. A real deal even compared to non-period style wools at JoAnn fabrics.

Mercury Sutler in Texas has ready made pants in very small sizes up to some 40+ sizes in sky blue, dark blue and gray. They are close out products and are $29.00 a pair. I bought one pair and am about to buy another. They are OK pants , all wool and good price.

Contact Woolrich directly. If you purchase the entire bolt, their wool is $15 per yard. Sometimes they have partial bolts.

Something else to consider is cotton jean. Ben Tart sells a gray cotton jean for $12 per yard. I've made trousers out of plain mattress ticking dyed with walnuts. Corduroy is also a good period fabric, as is denim (not the heavy, canvas-like stuff). There's other options besides wool or jeanwool.

wouldnt woolrich say if it wasnt 100%? i always hear different...but woolrich will tell you its 100%, ive done enough contacting.

and i dont mind running into the store and getting what is needed. i know its hard to find it sold by partial bolts.

BUT if you do call the woolrich store, i do believe they do mail orders out of the store. i remember hearing a customer asking about sending a list and having it shipped...but im not certain about that.

heres the #
woolrich outlet store (has wool) (570)769-7401
or you may want to try the woolrich woolen mills sales which is (570)769-6471

Supposedly, Woolrich is starting to make their kerseys in 100% wool now. For years they have had a 85/15 wool/synthetic blend. This as a result of rising prices for the synthetic fibers.

I recently got a Federal overcoat made from their new 100% wool. I'll tell you this, I like it. It is lighter weight than the 85/15, yet is warmer at the same time.

Sir,

In your statement you say, "Supposedly, Woolrich is starting to make their kerseys in 100% wool now." You then mention that you have recieved a presumably new Federal overcoat made that from their "new 100% wool kersey". Wouldn't this mean that they actually are making 100% wool?

Where did you hear that they were bringing on a line of 100% wool? It is still not offered on their website, and I am curious as to the source of your information. Their website still states that their kerseys are 85/15, although their jeancloth content does not appear to be tainted with polyester/nylon.

OK...I went straight to the source. Yesterday I sent an email asking Woolrich about the "rumors" of them carrying 100% wool. I recieved a reply this morning.

Currently they are only offering two of their kerseys in 100% wool, their sky blue and dark navy blue. Price is $17+change/yd. + s/h, minimum order 15 yards. Swatch packets are available.

Now if only they can start offering their morning sky and royal blue in 100% wool, we'll be set!

I finally got my swatches of woolrich 100% wool kersey in sky blue and dark navy blue. I will be doing a burn test tonight, and will pass the results onto the board.
