I have a friend who is elderly and willing to part with a pre-CW sword that has some value to it.

I could use suggestions on where/how to find someone who could adequately appraise the value of the item.

There is a chance, unprovable after many years, that it may have once belonged to the great-great grandnephew of Napolean Bonaparte who attended West Point. There is no way to prove that though.

Any help would be appreciated.

You might turn your friend on to this link:

http://www.appraisersassoc.org/appraisersassoc.org/find.html

This is a professional organization for personal property appraisers. There is a link on their site to assist in locating someone who would fit the bill.

Now, if you need real estate appraised in central or southeastern Ohio......... :D

Without solid provence, it is better to appraise just the artifact itself. Type, and condition of sword are factors. What kind of sword is it? Some relic dealers will appraise items, but it may cost you more than it is worth. I believe it is North/South trader that puts out a yearly relic price list. These are usually from the auction market of the previous year.

Doug,

Being near Hagerstown, you're not too far from Gettysburg. The Horse Soldier does very professional appraisals, in fact the NPS uses them for to get appraisals for insurance purposes, when dealing with their own artifacts.

Also, it's alway a good rule of thumb to get more than one appraisal, if he's looking to part with the sword.

I can't remember the name, but there is a relic shop in Sharpsburg MD that may be willing to help. They have many originals arms for sale there.

Gil is referring to the Sharpsburg Arsenal. You can Google that name and get their location and contact information.
It is a rather HIGH end place, like walking in a museum with price tags on everything displayed.

Go to: http://www.cds1.net/~nardi/swords/index.htm

I have a rare 1850 Staff Officers sword made by Mintzer (sic) the buttonmaker from Phil. and Tom Nardi knew that Mintzer did make a few swords.
