I am a museum director looking for an unusual uniform material for a potential new exhibit. The exhibit will be based on the attached detail from a photograph of Mississippi troops in the field. Notice the trousers of the man with the frying pan. I have had this material referred to as "window pane". Have any of you heard of this or have any ideas where I might be able to get it? Thanks, also does any one know how I can contact the skillet lickers?

You can see the image at http://civilwar-life.com/M1816.htm

I think I've seen that photo captioned as Florida troops, but it could well be Mississippi troops in Florida. In any case, the trowsers are civilian, not uniform material. I suggest you get in touch with Family Heirloom Weavers http://www.familyheirloomweavers.com/ to see if they can help.

You might try Chris Utley of Carter & Jasper Mercantile.
He does mostly civillian clothing/items, and are easy to reach.

If you are trying to find the Jersey Skillet Licker, try calling Joe Hoffman (Owner) at 1-800-431-1862. They are a high quality supplier, not a reenactment group as such.

How d' ye!

In brief and ot over-generalize...

"Window pane check" is a common fabric pattern usually consisting of single and sometimes double lines,, woven or printed, so as to form patterns of small squares that resemble the small panes of glass in an old window.
I have seen it in linen, cotton, and wool.

Various vendors/makers occassionally make up shirts, and even trousers in it. I used to have a nice pair of Nick Sekela made trousers in gray with very small black "panes" and another pair of his in light brown with dark brown "panes."
I do not know how vendors determine what to make and stock, other than by demand, but if you need something there are a number of trouser, etc., custom makers who would likely take on a custom order for something specific?

Family Heirloom Weavers made the run at my request several years ago and I do not believe that Pat had run anymore. Give him a call and see. If not follow this link to Denver Fabrics http://www.denverfabrics.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=18580&Category_Code=WO-prints&Product_Count=5

The picture that you refer to is the 9th Mississippi at Pensacola. 2 fellows are wearing the identical pattern in two of the pictures. I believe the Denver Fabrics material will do just fine if Pat is out of stock. Good luck and contact me if you need any more info.
