VICKSBURG, MS During the week of May 6, 2007, vandals looted the fortification and cultural landscape at the Texas monument located along the historic Railroad Redoubt.

The Texas monument, dedicated in 1961, maintains one of nine fortifications in the area used in the defense of Vicksburg, and was the only fortification penetrated by Union forces. The Railroad redoubt, on the list of Classified Structures, is also designated as a site of National Significance. Archeologists at the Southeastern Archeological Center (SEAC), located in Tallahassee, Florida, assisted staff with the damage assessment, estimated at 10s of thousands of dollars, and crime scene management.

Violations for this offense fall under the Archeological Resource Protection Act of 1979. A reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the violators is being offered through Crime Stoppers and private donation totaling $10,000.00.

If I knew who did it, I'd turn them in for FREE.

I have a habit of checking old cemeteries for CW veterans graves and when I see the stones vandalized, or read about something like this it makes me sick. :-x Naturally these folks that did this were "so brave" that they did it under cover of darkness for fear of not being caught by the law, but for fear of getting their rear ends whupped if some of us caught them.
I think the law would be more lenient on them than we would.

And yes...I'd turn them in, and then take the reward money and donate it to battlefield preservation...
