They are sold by the piece. Yes, they are a strike anywhere type match. The containers are pressed board, painted and shellacked as weather proofing. They also have a sand paper/emory striker (like the packaging of many original matches came ). They come in one of three colors - Black, Red and Yellow.

A brief history. Wm. Gates began manufactoring matches in the mid 1840's in Frankfort, NY. He set up a factory on Mayer Creek, near the Erie Canal. His matches were sold from Maine to Iowa. His business was so lucrative that between 1864 to 1877 a revenue of one cent was levied on every box of 100 matches was assessed toward the war debt. Nearly $3,000,000.00 was paid on Gates matches alone. At his death in 1877 his company became Gates & Sons, Inc. and in 1881 it joined the Diamond Match Company.
