Hey guys I'm fairly new to re-enacting and being a city boy dont know too much about rifles. I'm looking for a 1853 Enfield probably new but if any has any they might be willing to sell contact me at mayorofmansville@netscape.net. anyway back to the topic, I am looking at the Armisport and the Euroarms models and would like to know the pros and cons of each. which do you think would be a better choice for both quality, and historically. Also I plan to do some live firing any notes on which one may do better there? any help would be great thanks guys!

From a cosmetic standpoint I think the Armisport is closer to the original than the Euroarms. Both need a lot of work to make them better. You should check with the NCO of you unit to make sure they want you to have an Enfield before you buy anything. If you are looking for a Defarbed one there are several dealers that can help you. The one that I know of is the Company Quartermaster. Here is the web page address just click on the link. http://members.verizon.net/~vze3jhwa/ Both will shoot equally well once you work up a good powder charge, select the right bullet and do a little work on the trigger pull.

In terms of aesthetics, I would agree with Major: Armisport gets the edge. Nicer stock, closer to historically accurate. Based on my own experience with the brand and on what I have seen in my own unit over the last ten years, I would have to say Euroarms performs more reliably in the field. Fewer problems.

The best reproduction I have seen, though, was by John Zimmerman. One of our recruits showed up to his first event with one last year, and all of the veterans were envious.

If you plan to do any live firing with your Enfield, PLEASE consider buying a second barrel. Use one exclusively for target shooting, the other only at reenactments, and never forget to swap them out. You never know when live firing will leave something behind in the barrel that could become a dangerous projectile during a reenactment.

Armisport is closer to period as far as weight goes, however the Euroarms' lock can take original parts put in it, which Armisport can't. As far as shooting, I'll tell you from experience, the Euroarms wins hands down. The extra weight gives it less recoil. As far as the changing barrels thing, if you clean your gun, there won't be any projectiles in the barrel. I know, because I deer hunt with my Euroarms, and it's clean enough to eat out of.

BTW: My best accuracy on Euroarms is with 75 grains of FFg Goex and a 520 grain hand-cast minie ball.

I find the best accuracy with an Armisport to be with 70 grains FFF Pyrodex and a .45 cal. copper coated XTP hollow point saboted to .58 cal. But, thats cheating...:D
