Gents,

Does anyone know of some period types of earthen field bake oven plans? I am trying to find information having become very interested in this type of impression.

I have been reading the 1862 Officer's Companion which gave several types of field bake ovens, but they were very difficult to interpret Unless I am making something simple much more difficult than it needs to be.

If anyone has done this impression or has some plans, recipes, baking methods, please let me know.

Thanks a lot!

Thomas,
Last year at the event at Fort Granger in TN. we built and used brick bake ovens and supplied the garrison of over 100 men with fresh bread the entire weekend. If you want to see pics of it go to the Western Independent Greys website and look under images. Matt Woodburn was the architect of them and did the research. They were awsome.

Hey Tom,

Below is a link to a pdf of the book "Culinary Hints for the Soldier". It was published in 1862. Inside is some info on bake ovens and bread. The first link will go right to the pdf. The second is to the AC and the link for the book is at the top.
I was planning on bringing a copy for you on Sunday anyhow because of your project. I still will just in case.
