Is it neccesary to put a beeswax coating in the canteen, or is it just a preferance ?

It's just a preferance. If you own a quality tin canteen and know how to take care of it, you will not have any problems.

As was mentioned above, it is not necessary for tin canteens but it is necessary for wooden canteens. Again, with both types of canteens, it is also important that you know how to properly take care of them between events.

Well, I put beeswax in my canteen anyway and i'm glad I did.

I was at a reenactment one year and took a fall, it caused a leak. I got back to camp and emptied it out and set it over the fire for a second.
It cured the leak problem till I got it fixed.
