Are you wanting to make a "gum" or a painted cloth blanket?

My suggestion would be to BUY a quality rubber blanket. They are as important for a fed in the field as a good wool blanket. There is no way for you to try to Vulcanize Cloth so dont even try. Some things you just have to purchase. Try one of the suppliers that carry Sekala's rubber blanket. You will be glad you did.

If you would like to try and make your own painted cloth, I found some instructions. http://www.geocities.com/union_guard/

Look under the articles section

I agree with Terry, though in my experience the difficulty is not in vulcanizing (you can do that in a home oven), but getting the smoothness that was accomplished in the period by large pressure rollers. For very small items, the kind of liquid rubber that's used for making molds can be mixed with lampblack and painted on cloth and smoothed as much as possible, but over a large surfaces, it's just not going to look right, with unnevenness, brush strokes, etc.

Painted cloth (oil cloth) on the other hand his doable at home, and the search engine should produce some instructions and/or recipes.

I just received a vulcanized rubber gum blanket from Jarnigan and I am very impressed by it, you should consider it as well.
