Hello,
I am in need of a good quality federal canteen.Where can I get a good smoothside for a reasonable price. I've seen Orchard Hill's, it looks good, but is it worth the money. Had a stainless steel, but wasn't liking it, it wasn't authentic enough for me. Or is anybody willing to do some trading.

Thanks!

Orchard Hills canteens are worth the money. By the time you spend X amount of dollars for a proper strap, cover, etc. on a $50 sutlers row canteen you will have wished you had just bought a quality one (Orchard Hill) in the first place.

The difference in price between sutler row stainless and a well made new tin canteen is about $20, in my experience ($25 vs $45). Considering what your entire kit costs you, that's a fairly small amount to pay for something you say you'll be happier with than what you have now.

In addition, canteens are a fairly common item coming up for sale, in used but good condition, on this and other fora, usually at some savings from new. You just have to be patient and move quickly when they show up.

Orchard Hill's canteens are incredible. Remember as usual, you get what you pay for.

Comrades,

I second the notion regarding Orchard Hill's canteens. Not only are they an excellent reproduction, and worth every penny, but the Houde's are good people, and will always make it right if something isn't to your liking. I know them personally, and would never hesitate to reccomend them.

I have Federal Canteens from both S&S Gettysburg, and Regimental Quartermaster's campaigner line. Both are very nice as well.
The S&S is a little nicer, IMHO.
Just offering options to the excellent Orchard Hill canteen.

All I can say is I love my Orchard Hill canteen. It is spot on with an original and believe it or not I have had people comment on the details of it such as the shape of the pewter spout.
