I am in the process of upgrading my impression to more accuratley represent a soldier in the AoT.
As a result, i am eliminating alot of sutler row items, and next on the list is my stainless steel 1858 smoothside canteen with gray cover.
my question is what type of canteen would be proper to carry, i have looked at the St. Louis model ( tin), offered by Blockade runner with a jean wool cover and i am leaning towards that itme.
I have also been offered a copper drum canteen from the AC forum and that sounds good to me as well.
Any ideas would be apprecaited. Also if someone has a canteen they may wish to sell, i would be interested in that as well.

While I'm sure Jim has givin' you excellent advice in the PM...
Let me just say that it depends on who all your reenacting. One canteen may not get it done. A good tin drum will cover just about any Confederate impression. If your also planning on putting together a Federal impression you'll need a federal canteen also.... I have a western federal canteen from the Regimental Quartermaster campaigner line that is nice, I also have one from S&S , and it's even nicer.

I purchased my tin drum from Richmonville, and it's very well constructed, and not to large. Missouri Boot & Shoe has a nice selection of authentic slings.

To point you in the correct direction of which type of canteen to purchase, it would be helpful to know which side and which army you wish to portray.
One piece of advice though, a good tin '58 smoothside canteen with a cloth strap, brown or grey jencloth cover and a jute twine cork string would be hard to beat for any impression, confederate, federal, eart or west.
thanks,

It was a fairly common practice to take the cover off, too, although you don't see that a lot in reenactor circles.
