I've convinced myself I needed to own a civil war era rifle. I've chosen the 1853 Enfield. The Armi Sport and Euro Arms are both within my price range, although some dealers show a 200.00 difference in price between to two. What's the difference between the two? One dealer shows the Euro Arms to be around 700.00 and another 500.00 does Euro Arms make two 1853 Enfields? I'm new to black powder shooting and thinking about getting into reenacting so I'm looking for some sound advise from the experts.

The ArmiSport is lighter and slightly more true to the original.

Some of the unauthentic points of the repro Enfields fixed...And a decent price

I'm very new too, so I can't tell you which brand is better, however I'm quite frugal. I've been looking at musket prices since October. There are some huge price differences out there for identical firearms. If $500- $700 is your price range, then the Blockade Runner defarb might be the way to go.

I've seen the not-defarbed Armi Sport Enfields as high as $525 and as low as $450. The best thing I can tell you is, don't buy the first thing you see.

Brigade Sutler has them for $450
C&D Jarnigan for $453
Regimental Quatermaster $460
Fall Creek for $460
Blockade Runner for $479

The only thing left to do after that is to compare shipping cost, and vendor reputation.

I hope that helps.

If you've got a bit of time and patience, keep checking this and the AC forum. Weapons come up for sale fairly regularly and you may find a better deal if you don't mind having a used piece.

The Armi Sport is the better Enfield of the two although it needs some alterations and defarbing to make it closer to the original.

Got to agree with HuntDawg on this... you can get some deals on the used market. Bought my Armisport Enfield off of the forums for $400 defarbed but in new condition. It took and $150 to properly defarb it. Also bought my defarbed Springfield from S&S Sutler for $300.00. It needed some TLC but cleaned up nicely. Keep your eye out and patience will pay off...

This forum and the AC are the most likely places but keep an eye out on the N-SSA forums as well.

The only reason that I can think of for an Enfield to be $700 is that you would be ordering defarbed. The going rate is about $460 for one right off the rack and an unused one defarbed for $700 would be a good deal. If you choose to buy off the rack ( not defarbed) Armisport is the way to go.

thanks,

Try James River Armory. Excellent weapons totally defarbed, great service and good prices.

You could also try the Company Quartermaster if you want a defarbed one. Just click on the link. http://members.verizon.net/~vze3jhwa/

Go to C&C sutlery. $420 for an Enfield.

You are quite welcome.

I called C&C a couple months ago. The musket prices are not up to date. He told me that the Enfields are $470.

You can try at Gettysburg Sutler, that's where I bought mine a long time ago. I bought mine at a reasonable price of $395 + S/H and it came to $410. I don't know if the price changed but you can call them and ask. If you want to go a little cheap and save a bit money then that's the place. Good luck!

You will find that the off-the-rack price for muskets is one of the few constants in this hobby. + or - $20 or so is about all you'll find. Given that, I would stress the customer service of the sutler you buy from. I'm reluctant to endorse any one sutler's customer service because on the whole I'm quite patient and tolerant, and have rarely needed more than a single call or email to sort anything out. However, for an off-the-shelf musket, around $460 is reasonable, then pick your merchant. A defarbed one is more and you have to decide if those little details are really what you're looking for, or if they'll even be appreciated in the reenacting circles you move in.

I also just got a '61 Springfield from the Gettysburg Sutler and was well pleased with the service. The price was good too; about $470 if I remember correctly.

Regimental Quartermaster has raised their musket prices. For instance: The Armi Sport Enfield was $460... Now $505. I don't know if the other companies are going to follow suit or not.

I called Gettysburg Sutler awhile back and they quoted me $445 for the Armi Sport Enfield, with $30 shipping. I wish they'd update their website though, it's way out of date.

Yeah they should update their prices on their website. But I think you can get a rifle there a little cheaper than most sutlers that's out there. I'm just glad I got mine when the price was fairly right: $395 + S/H = $410.

Everything from Italy went up drastically Jan 1. Henry’s went up $75. overnight. It’s that Dollar verses the Euro thing again.

Sounds like it is time to stock up then because the dollar is expected to continue to get weaker versus the Euro for a multitude of reasons. In fact, just recently, a couple of the Persian Gulf nations have reduced their holding in U.S. dollars percentage wise in favor of the Euro. Also, it will be curious to see the effect on the global oil market of Iran's decision to start pricing their oil in Euro's instead of dollars. Overall, the dollar may have a rocky year or two.

Wow!
I am sure glad I got mine a few years ago at Regimental Quartermaster: $385 and I carried it out of the shop!

$385? That's not bad. My Enfield only costed $10 more but I don't care, I got it and it's still in good use. Although the stock is a bit beat up I plan on getting a new stock.
