Gettysburg National Military Park's monument preservation staff will reset the life-sized bronze sculpture of a Zouave infantryman onto the pedastal of the 114th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry monument on Thursday, March 9 at approximately 2 p.m.
The monument, dedicated on July 2, 1886, was damaged along with two other monuments on the Gettysburg battlefield during the early morning hours of Feb 16th, 2006.
The National Park Service is investigating the incidents and is looking for information that may help them find the individuals responsible. They have received no significant leads. The Friends of the National Parks at Gettysburg and other organizations and individuals have posted a reward of $36,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the recent monument vandalization.
Preservation specialists at Gettysburg spent a total of 130 hours working on the 114th PA monument, fabricating a new ramrod, which had been stolen, carefully removing gouges, and refurbishing the bronze figure. Repairs are underway on the cast iron fence that surrounds the monument...
I will be there in uniform to take photos and just see it all done. There are more photos of the repaired monument...and the vandalism on www.114thpa.com under the 2006 photos link.
Regards,
Shaun
