The Battle of South Mountain Sesquicentennial Steering Committee Announces: Local historic groups come together to pool their time, talent, and resources

Middletown, MD - August 15, 2011 -Various historical and preservation groups through out the Middletown Valley have pooled their time, talent and resources to form the Battle of South Mountain Sesquicentennial Committee, a consortium of historic and civic non-profits within Middletown Valley focused on sponsoring events related to the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of South Mountain, a pivotal engagement in the Maryland Campaign of the American Civil War, that took place during September, 1862. In January, 2011, South Mountain was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

"As 2011 approached, we saw the State of Maryland was without a state sponsored sesquicentennial committee", stated Vice President of Central Maryland Heritage League and Committee Chair, Nancy Koval. "A challenging economy and budget cuts have greatly reduced funding once available to non-profits". In spite of that, the historical and preservation organizations have come together. These groups include, The Central Maryland Heritage League , the Middletown Historical Society, the South Mountain Heritage Society , Zion Lutheran Church , the Citizen's for the Preservation of Middletown Valley , The National Museum of Civil War Medicine, The Maryland National Road, and Betsy Estilow, professor at Hood College serving as historical advisor.

Together and with the support of the Hagerstown Washington County Convention & Visitors Bureau, The Tourism Council of Frederick County, and The Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area the consortium is in the planning stages of events to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of South Mountain with an emphasis on the contributions of the surrounding communities. These events include Civil War era music concerts, walking tours of Middletown and Burkittsville, a Civil War Ball and much more. The events will run from September 8 - September 22, 2012.

The website for the Sesquicentennial Steering Committee for the Battle of South Mountain can be found at www.southmountaincivilwar150.org . A smiliar site, www.marylandcampaign150.org has been established by the Steering Committee as a resource for heritage travelers to learn about the upcoming Sesquicentennial Events through out the region.

I'll be doing the battlefield hike on the 17th--maybe I'll stop by this event afterwards! Sounds like fun!
