I have a Jean Cloth jacket that have CSA buttons on it. I want to put the correct buttons on. It is a confederate single breasted officer jacket.

Thank you,
Jim Parmer

Jim, What's wrong with the CSA buttons? They used them. I'd suggest at best using your state or unit button, at worst a wooden one. You might even try a mixture with a few federal eagles thrown in. My jean wool frock has NC state buttons with two federal eagle buttons sewn on as replacements. You will find that many wooden buttons have the centers break out of them. I'd suggest looking into what the period correct button might be for your unit, and if none found, sew on what you like. Block C for cavalry would do very nicely!

There's a lot of right answers.
What state?

1-Federal Officer Buttons
2- Branch of Service Buttons- I,C, A
3- State Buttons, but only if you want to change them out a lot
4- Pre War Buttons

Jim,
I echo what Mr. Anders said. also, what theater and time frame are you trying to represent? If you want to sew something on and not replace them often, I would go with Federal buttons first and foremost. Did "CSA" buttons exist? Certainly, but their documented use is kind of spotty. The Federal buttons will give you the most mileage. Take a gander at the officer frocks/jackets in EOG.

Just my two kopecks,

Alabama troops had some nice buttons early war but the supply problem quickly made them scarce. IMO a nice set of flat buttons would look appropriate on a chaplins coat.
