This is a very tough to find date on the M1861 rifle musket, and most examples saw four years of hard service. This one was then “farmerized” as a hunting gun, and lost it bands. But the lock is in good shape and could easily be used to upgrade an original or repro musket.

The action is complete and functions well. Bolster is marred and there is pitting around the nipple, etc. Rear sight is missing. Sling swivel is missing on the trigger guard. Butt plate is present and stock is still full length with no breaks.

The bands and band springs were removed, and unfortunately the stock was then smoothed down. As such, it could not be restored by simply replacing the bands as they would slide too far up. There was a tin band wrapped around the front end many years ago when the bands disappeared. Barrel is full length with front sight but no rifling.

The rifle musket turned up in a family estate in Cannon Falls, MN but unfortunately the several family names did not reveal a match in the Minnesota rosters. So buy it for the sum of the parts (mostly that rare lock) and have fun restoring the piece.
