Got an odd comment from a co-reenactor. He stated that a events 'back east' (I am out west) there are people/company/? that will rent rifles for the bigger events. Can anyone on the east coast confirm or deny this. Thanks

Mods - if this should be somewhere else, please move.

I cant speak for up east, but down here in Georgia, it sounds like chin music to me. I never have heard of such a thing

Hmmm ANV territory here, and I never heard anything like that round these parts. I can't even begin to imagine the liability issues on this one.

I'm not sure liability is an issue if this sort of agreement were reached on an informal enough level: "Sure, I'll rent you a musket for $50 a day. Return it cleaned." But I've never heard of any formal musket rental of any sort.

Ever been on a movie or film set?
They rent this sort of thing all the time.
But, see if you as a reenacter can get paid the same kind of money for supplying your own firearm, uniforms, skill, knowledge, etc., etc. It wont happen.

There was an episode on the television show "The District" where a bunch of the men on the police force went to have a fun weekend reenacting. About the only thing about the show that was accurate was that there are reenactors of the civil war. About everything else was fiction and quite a few of the incidents were blatantly dangerous. But the plot line centered on someone who showed up and rented everything, including an already loaded musket. And the realism when downhill from there. Not exactly the best image of reenactors but possibly a source of "someone told me about reenactors who [fill in the blank with the activity]

Just a thought.

But in reality, let me know if someone on the field is renting a musket. I'll beat a very hasty retreat and get as far away from him as possible.

Never heard of renting muskets or equipment in Civil War reenacting, but I do know of Seminole Indian War events here in Florida that have it set up where guys loan extra muskets and such out. They just take your Drivers License and and hold it till they get the items returned. But also Seminole Indian War events are a lot smaller than mainstream WBTS events.

Mike,

I'll be glad to rent you a nice clean rifle-musket. Heck, we usually lend them out for free. :)
